GETTING WORK, SIDE POST

OK this job is not a "fashionable post" but I did want to give some advice to any of you interested in some advice.

I am in a loose group of 8 people who are 100% employed. That's right, we all have work. And not ghetto either. Pretty much I know a few other people with jobs here at law school, but otherwise there are a lot of people with no work, or have a job they hate. So what is different about us? (I'll edit political differences hehe):

1. We uniformly rejected career services' advice to not look for work. We have applied to THOUSANDS OF JOBS and have been rejected hundreds of times. Not kidding. You should treat getting a job like it's your job. Thus we are not "lucky" we have jobs, we WORKED FOR IT.

2. Lewis and Clark, as well as many other law schools, are part of a huge job data base called the "Intercollegiate Job Bank." Our career services have the password and weblink. Go to it, click on the links, and go through each school. That's when you start to get upset about our career services.. other school have tons of jobs posted. Apply to work that interests you. ALL THE JOBS THAT INTEREST YOU AT ALL. All you need is one to like you back. Be prepared for rejections. LOTS OF REJECTIONS. All part of the fun.

3. Remember, you went to a second tier law school, so don't act like you are owed work. Nobody gives a shit about L & C, nobody gives a shit about you. Plus the market is flooded with students from top tier's. Make them care- be enthusiastic, you are young, you are willing and ready to work hard. And then be that. Spin your resume- don't lie because then they will expect you to be able to do what you say- but do make sure you convey yourself in the best light. Think about what an employer wants, and what you can bring to the table. And don't be upset if they still don't care about you. Getting work is about having a high AQ, and being fearless about getting rejected, repeatedly.

4. If you don't like law, DON'T DO LAW. Who are you trying to please? Your parents? Your boyfriend/girlfriend? Your friends? Screw them. This is your life. You need to follow what makes you happy. AND PS IT PAYS. It's bullshit to have a 7 year degree and to know you'll get paid the same as people with two year degrees. SO, you want to be an enviro geek? You probably have a science undergrad? Post on monster. Look into NEPA planning. Find recruiters. There is a ton out there for someone dedicated. Plus, you don't have to take the bar. Yippee!

5. Treat finding a job like it is your job until you have a job. 40 hours a week baby, seriously.

Good Luck!!!!

Umm I declare the current fashion to be hideous. HIDEOUS.

I can't bring myself to post about fashion right now because it is hideous.

Case and point:Catherine Zeta Jones. We can all agree the woman is gorgeous, yes?? Well dressed, often the height of sophistication (ignore movie roles). Look at this outfit. Look at it:

How ugly is this outfit???

SO here are some of the things I hate about the current fashion. Please feel free to add.
  • The mens clothes are feminine. I have no problem with men being feminine, unless they want to date women. First of all, skinny pants aren't attractive on men! They aren't even attractive on women. Running shoes with jeans... is a guy combo and just ugly. (I admit I do it too sometimes, but mostly when I seriously have NOTHING else to wear.) I also, seriously and truly despise the diamond pattern shirts/sweaters etc. THEY ARE UGLY. The more of them I see, the more profoundly I hate the style.
  • The women's clothes are unisex. And too tight! I really don't want to see your stomach hanging over the waist of your pants.
  • I think a lot of the fabrics are too thin, or "weak" right now (I don't know the technical term) so everything gets stretched by just being washed, or conforms too closely to curves that I don't want to see. Simultaneously, there should be some shape to clothing. I don't like putting on a shirt that could easily be a bag with a hole cut out for my head and arms. I have a shape! The maternity cut is a style that has been in for quite awhile. Ummm we are not all preg, nor should we dress as such.
  • I pretty much hate all the shoes. ALL OF THE SHOES out right now. I love shoes too! I'm being tortured. Ballet slipper style has been in for what, 3 years? 4? It was cute for one. The square toe is comfortable but clunky, heavy and not feminine. Why would I want to buy shoes that look "weathered"? I'm not 5, and I need shoes that look semi-nice. Old lady shoes (with the fringe) are also apparently in. Sorry, not gonna wear grandma shoes!

The Odd Couple

You decide, which one is Matthau and which one is Lemmon?

Portman's outfit is clearly uglier, but the combo is what really takes it to the next level.

The Visiting Prof...

Prof Johnson needs an updated photo, stat! She is much more cuter than this:

And, interestingly, a prof who actually bothers to be up-to-date in the law!

Heard she wasn't a good teacher... and then found out why people were saying that. She makes you LEARN, it was soooooo hard. Law school is about padding your GPA, didn't you know? Not actually learning anything.

GET ME OUT OF HERE!

EWWWWW!

Sorry, but miss Jolie was already hitting that too thin-nasty look... and then this--
Could that outfit be more hideous? But, then again, she can always say she'll never look this bad:

HEATH LEDGER DEAD

Ummm.... holy crap is all we have to say.

WHAT YOU MAKE AS A LAWYER IN OREGON.

Finally I understand why the lawyers at even the biglaw firms dress like shit in Portland. Apparently it is normal to make... $30-40k when you graduate from Lewis & Clark (according to career services, telling a fellow student). YEAH! I'm so glad I left my CAREER that actually was paying me MONEY so that I could end up with an extra $120k in debt and prospects to make LESS than what I was making before. I also love the dress code: REI wide sweaters with old lady patterns and crocs (I don't care how comfortable those shoes are, they are so ugly they hurt me emotionally in a profound way).

So what that with careful planning you can make more than that with no degree, or an associates degree (not just talk, I have friends who were making way more than that with either)! Be proud! Positive self talk for those of you feeling GHETTO for that $60k job offer. You are above the norm here, aka Career Services (which proudly displays the average on the webpage as $56k. That's right... they are PROUD that $56k is the average.... and apparently that is a HIGH. I actually think the webpage is bs, and that real check of numbers would be much more embarrassing to the school. But I no longer care enough to check. )

As an aside, we are graduating shortly (I'm so proud...) and thus will only post when we feel. While the 1L's this year apparently didn't need to study... (I can't wait to see their faces when they get their grades) if any of them, or even a 2L wants to take over, my cohort and I are more than willing to let go. Otherwise, this page is likely to go defunct by May... if not earlier. LUCK to you all. And plan now, or find yourselves in the 30 year pay off plan. Unless mommy/daddy paid etc, in which case, you probably don't even know how GHETTO $30-40k is for 7 year degree.
